What is PREA

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003 is a federal law aimed at preventing, detecting, and responding to sexual abuse and harassment in correctional facilities across the United States. This includes prisons, jails, juvenile facilities, and community corrections residential facilities.  The following Community-Based Residential Facilities operated by Genesis Behavioral Services under contract to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) are covered by PREA:

PREA incidents can involve:

  • Resident-on-resident sexual abuse
  • Resident-on-resident abusive sexual contact
  • Staff sexual misconduct
  • Staff sexual harassment of a resident
